Histologist
Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Lead and Lab Manager, this role ensures accurate identification of specimens and performs a variety of histology tasks including processing, embedding, cutting, staining, and filing tissue samples for diagnostic evaluation by surgical pathologists. Additional responsibilities include preparing solutions, maintaining equipment, documenting quality control, managing supplies, and supporting general laboratory operations. Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent Preferred Qualifications: HT or HTL (ASCP) certification from an accredited Histology program Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or completion of at least 24 semester hours in Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physics, or related sciences Prior experience in a histology laboratory Familiarity with other areas of pathology Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills to manage sensitive and confidential information Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with evidence-based practices, quality improvement, and laboratory protocols Up-to-date technical knowledge in Histology and Pathology Proficiency in computer systems and software relevant to laboratory operations. Key Responsibilities: Ensure proper processing, orientation, and embedding of tissue specimens based on tissue type. Perform routine microtomy with efficiency and precision. Prepare stains and reagents for routine histological staining. Dispose of chemical waste in compliance with safety protocols. Conduct daily maintenance and documentation for laboratory equipment. Troubleshoot equipment and procedural issues. Meet quality control and proficiency testing standards as required by regulatory bodies. Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives and data collection. Engage in continuing education and professional development. Maintain inventory and stock supplies according to procedures. Utilize job-related software and systems effectively. Travel to other clinical facilities may be required to support staffing needs. Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, attention to detail, and effective communication with colleagues, patients, and vendors. Perform additional duties or special projects as assigned.
