Markel's Wholesale and Specialty Underwriting Systems area is seeking a Director to oversee and manage multiple teams delivering our underwriting solutions. This Director ensures the underwriting technology delivery of a Fortune 500 insurance company remains robust, secure, efficient, and compliant within a highly regulated industry. This role will oversee the delivery of critical insurance solutions that support our growing Wholesale and Specialty business division. The ideal candidate brings deep technology experience and will ensure delivery excellence, continuous improvement, and innovation while leading multiple cross functional teams. Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage technology delivery teams for all core underwriting applications supporting Wholesale and Specialty within US and Bermuda. Contributes to strategic and operational business goals as a member of the Insurance Systems IT management team. Collaborate closely with product management, enterprise architecture, and other key stakeholders to align execution plans with overall business needs and roadmaps. Manage and support software delivery release processes with a keen eye towards speed to market and quality. Continuously monitor owned application and infrastructure health; implement proactive alerting, tracking, and remediation processes. In collaboration with other technology delivery teams, drive automation initiatives across Cloud and DevOps solutions to improve efficiency, reliability, and scalability of owned solutions. Execute and enhance quarterly SOX control, application waivers, and other governance reporting. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence within delivery teams. Required Qualifications:
Extensive experience (10+ years) in technology delivery, operations, security, and controls, ideally within a large, regulated enterprise environment, preferably in the insurance industry. Proven hands-on leadership experience managing multi-disciplinary teams with a mix of vendor partners and internal talent. Strong knowledge and proven track record utilizing a wide range of technologies across variable environments (SaaS, Private Cloud, On-Prem) to drive business results in a cost-effective way. Hands-on experience of technology delivery processes, tools, and techniques across the entire lifecycle. Proven ability to distill business and technology roadmaps into executable plans. Strong knowledge of Governance, Risk, and Compliance frameworks (e.g., COBIT, SOX). Solid understanding of complete insurance lifecycle for both admitted and non-admitted product offerings. Excellent strategic thinking, planning, and communication skills. Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work across multiple teams (IT and business) and geographies. Preferred Skills:
Experience working in regulated industries (Insurance and/or Financial Services). Familiarity with agile delivery methodologies and value-stream based organization structures.
