Building Inspector

The City of Forest Park is seeking a Building Inspector to be responsible for inspection of buildings (residential and commercial), property maintenance inspections, and other duties as required. The position is full-time with a salary range of $68,228.23 - $86,011.18 annually, located in Forest Park, OH. Essential Functions

Provides sub-professional backup for the Building and/or Community Development Director. Head up the rental registration inspection program. Enforces federal, state and local building codes and ordinances regulating construction and alterations for buildings of all types of occupancies. Assists in plan review, administrative tasks, and technical matters. Assists the inspectors in preparing legal orders and charges in municipal court against code violators, which requires knowledge of building, fire and housing codes and City of Forest Park policies. Provides field inspection for the Building and Community Development Departments. Performs calculations for quantity cost estimates and other engineering work. Maintains accurate inspection records; and designs and manages cross training programs for staff. Responsible for coordination of phone calls and visitor inquiries at the office. Responsible for data entry into the computer files; use of computer to generate reports; enter payroll and the tracking data for productivity and accounting system. Convenes, consults and provides technical assistance to architects, contractors, engineers and citizens before and after permits are issued. Coordinates reviews for commercial projects: plan review; "as-built" plans and "as-built" inspections; determines if corrections are needed. Mediates difficult decisions and/or disagreements between owners, contractors and inspectors while maintaining goodwill with the public. During emergencies and critical situations, performs after-hour inspections to ensure public safety. Makes technical decisions while in the field performing inspections and conducting investigations. Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Knowledge of the applicable codes, ordinances and regulations regarding the building industry; knowledge of the methods, materials and workmanship standards governing the installation and modification of plumbing, gas, electrical and mechanical systems; knowledge of current developments in the building industry. Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with citizens, developers, employees and other departments. Mathematical ability including decimals and percentages; engineering calculations involving plane geometry, basic algebra, simple trigonometry including curves, tangents, etc. Ability to read construction drawings and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) specifications. Knowledge of computer operations including custom software for payroll and productivity reports. Minimum Required Experience and Training

Associate Degree in construction management or related field or high school education or GED equivalent plus 5 years progressively responsible experience in building inspections or construction management in specified areas and minor technical calculations or other equivalent combination of training and experience.
