Dental Assistant

This position is within the Dental Program located at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center. The position entails a wide range of intra-oral dental procedures and provides chair-side assistance in the clinic and operating room setting. The incumbent assists with, performs and educates patients regarding intra-oral procedures associated with various phases of restorative (prosthodontic and maxillofacial prosthetic), periodontal, endodontic, and oral surgery procedures. Responsibilities include: maintaining dental equipment in a clean and operative condition, maintaining supply levels, providing 4-handed dentistry, supporting and following all infectious disease policies, providing patient education, taking preliminary medical histories and vital signs, recording information related to the medical and dental history, making appointments and handling telephone, taking impressions for study casts, being responsible for more than one dentist when required, maintaining current required training, and other dental supportive services authorized by the licensed dentist. Additional duties include: applying topical anticariogenic agents to teeth, aiding in tooth shade selection, placing and removing matrix bands, selecting and pre-fitting provisional crowns, removing temporary cement, applying desensitizing agents to teeth, removing sutures placed by a licensed dentist, maintaining periodontal instrumentation and supplies, removing protective surgical dressings, placing and removing rubber dam, maintaining entire inventory for endodontic instrument, performing dental radiography, taking radiographs of inpatients and outpatients, maintaining x-ray area, operatory and dark room, monitoring levels of all x-ray supplies, providing instruction to newly assigned personnel, removing sutures placed by a licensed dentist, routing patients for further medical testing when required, assisting dentist in all oral surgical procedures including implants, maintaining sterility, keeping inventory of all equipment and supplies, preparing instruments, equipment and materials, and assuming that they are present and properly arranged for the operative procedure, preparation of general anesthesia, I.V. nitrous oxide and oxygen anesthesia equipment, and orienting new residents, dental assistants, students and staff to surgical routines. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am to 4:30pm Requirements include: being a U.S. Citizen, being proficient in written and spoken English, passing a pre-employment physical examination, and participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program. Basic requirements include: United States Citizenship, experience or education, and certification in radiologic competence. Preferred experience includes one year of dental assistant experience.
