Program Overview The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program operates on the campus of Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee and at Sunland in Marianna under the auspices of The State of Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program (DDDP) is dedicated to empowering persons with developmental disabilities charged with a felony crime to: Acquire the skills and supports that will prepare them for success in their future environments. Acquire the skills needed to become competent to stand trial. Position Summary This position works under the direction of an Institutional Security Specialist Shift Supervisor and on occasions, assumes the duties of the Shift Supervisor. Serves as officer in charge of a designated area on assigned shifts and disseminates performance related information verbally/written to the Shift Supervisor(s) concerning the activities of the subordinate Specialists assigned within the designated area. Provides intermediate guidance for Institutional Security Specialists by directing their work and as well as performing the duties of the Specialist I's, as needed: Assist subordinates in the monitoring of electronic sensory devices for the Forensic Services, including door alarms and fence alarms, through mobile patrols, walking patrols and stationary post assignments. Make visual and physical Security checks within the secure area of the Forensic facilities and surrounding area through both mobile and walking surveillance. Directs and performs necessary searches and inspections of persons and property to restrict the introduction and movement of contraband, as defined by Florida Statute or Forensic policy. Provide observation of Forensic residents outside the Forensic facilities to deter inappropriate actions by routinely supervising mobile and stationary patrols by Institutional Security Specialists. Utilizing state vehicles or occasionally through air travel, assume the lead direction of transporting Forensic residents to off grounds/out of town activities, such as court appearances, medical appointments and transfers to other facilities. Respond and provide direction during requests for assistance calls with unmanageable or potentially violent residents within the Forensic facilities and assist as needed in the escorting of residents deemed high escape risks on the grounds of the facility. Utilizing established and approved techniques, verbally and physically intervene with violent and unmanageable residents to resolve problem and prevent injury. Reviews Department Operating Procedures and Post Orders to ensure compliance and periodically makes written recommendations for revision or comments based on reviews to Chief's office. Participates in complex investigations, hiring and policy review committees and performance reviews on subordinate officers. Respond and participate in the recapture efforts of escaped Forensic residents, including those housed in the Forensic facilities and the general hospital areas with 916 court jurisdictions by performing patrols and at times provide directional instructions of escape recapture efforts, in the absence of the Shift Supervisor or higher-ranking authorities. Work closely with Law Enforcement agencies and Department of Corrections to encourage and maintain a good working relationship and to reciprocate assistance to their departments during emergencies. Provide assistance to local Law Enforcement as requested concerning investigations involving hospital staff, residents or property and assist in emergencies such as traffic control for accidents, searching arrestees and providing unarmed assistance in reports of suspicious and criminal activities, as requested. Monitor and assist in the functions of the Control Room operations to ensure accurate and concise information is received, recorded and dispatcher concerning all Security activities. In the absence of the Shift Supervisor, performs required duties relating to the planning and operations of the designated shift. Ability to document and ensure documentation is completed as required. Completes all required training. Maintain MANDT certification as required. Maintain timesheet, ensuring accuracy and submit timely in accordance with policy and procedure. Perform other related duties as required. The Work You Will Do Pathways is a 34-bed all male forensic facility working with individuals with disabilities in a secure setting. These individuals have been adjudicated by the courts as incompetent to proceed to trial and have significant behavioral and psychiatric issues. Pathways provides rehabilitative, vocational, and daily living skills training to the individuals served which allows for a smooth transition back into a non-secure residential or community setting. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others Minimum Qualifications Licensure/registration/certification requirements (If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite): One year of experience in providing custody or care of inmates or clients within the forensic area of a state mental health institution. In addition to the above, Florida Statutes, Chapter 943, requires that any person employed in this class must: (1)Be at least 19 years of age. (2)Be a citizen of the United States notwithstanding any laws of the State to the contrary. (3)Be a high school graduate or its "equivalent" as the term may be determined by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. (4)Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, nor have received a dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere or is found guilty of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication. (5)Have his/her processed fingerprints on file with the employing agency. (6)Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician based on specifications established by the Commission. (7)Have a good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission. (8)Have completed a 320-hour basic recruit training course or its equivalent as established by the Commission. A valid driver's license. License suspended or revoked for any reason, work permits (Business purpose/ Employment/Education only license) and some types of restricted license are not acceptable. Licenses that have "Corrective Lenses Restricted," are acceptable, provided the driver wears the corrective lenses while operating the vehicle.
