Public Works Inspector
The Public Works Inspector is responsible for performing field inspections of public infrastructure improvements, ensuring compliance with approved permits, engineered plans, construction standards, and regulatory requirements. The Inspector plays a critical role in quality assurance for both public and private infrastructure projects involving civil construction elements, such as grading, paving, sidewalks, trails, utilities and drainage systems, in addition to work within the public right-of-way. This role requires consistent, complete and accurate documentation, effective communication with contractors, and collaboration with engineering and permitting staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Conduct field inspections of assigned land use and right-of-way permits, private development improvements and work in the future/current rights-of-way. Ensure compliance with Engineering Design and Development Standards (EDDS), approved plans, permit conditions, and contract specifications. Maintain and annotate as-built drawings (redlines) during all phases of construction using 11"x17" approved plans. Log detailed inspection records in PermitTrax or assigned software, including notes, weather, photos, conversations, field changes, and compliance issues. Perform scheduled and spot inspections for traffic control, ADA compliance, erosion control, grading, utility installation, concrete/asphalt work, project punch lists, final acceptance and bond release requests. Respond to inspection requests within required timeframes (typically within one business day). Track and verify construction materials, quantities, methods and workmanship. Communicate proactively with project managers, contractors, site superintendents, and other stakeholders to address issues and resolve deficiencies. Monitor and report on Temporary Erosion and Sediment Control (TESC) measures weekly and following significant rain events. Coordinate with the site Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL), when applicable, and ensure compliance with the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and other permit conditions. Notify supervisor of unauthorized work or major plan deviations and assist with Stop Work Orders if necessary. Prepare for (print and review approved construction plans) and participate in pre-construction meetings to coordinate inspection requirements with developers and project managers. Review and recommend acceptance or provide corrections for submitted as-built documentation against field-verified records. Maintain professional and timely email and phone communications regarding inspection outcomes and compliance requirements. Respond to public requests related to assigned projects, permits, field work and complaints. Prepares memos, progress reports, notices and logs on various projects Maintains accurate and up-to-date inspection records and files Keeps abreast of current codes and regulations affecting City projects Maintains regular, predictable and reliable attendance.
