Machine Shop Manager

The Machine Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of machine shop operations, including strategic planning, production scheduling, labor management, inventory control, and continuous improvement. This role ensures efficient workflows, cost-effective operations, and alignment with organizational goals. Responsibilities: Strategic Planning & Budget Oversight Develop long-term strategies for machine shop operations aligned with organizational goals. Oversee budget planning and cost control measures to ensure financial efficiency. Planning & Scheduling Develop and maintain daily and weekly production schedules based on demand forecasts and capacity. Coordinate with engineering and production planning teams to ensure timely execution of machining operations. Monitor progress and adjust schedules to accommodate changes in priorities or unforeseen delays. Labor Management Supervise and lead a team of machinists and technicians, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback. Assign tasks and manage workloads to ensure balanced labor distribution and productivity. Enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures. Inventory Control Monitor and manage inventory of raw materials, tooling, and consumables to support uninterrupted production. Collaborate with procurement and warehouse teams to ensure timely replenishment and accurate stock levels. Implement and maintain inventory tracking systems and conduct regular audits. Cross-Department Coordination Collaborate with engineering, quality, and supply chain departments to optimize production workflows. Facilitate communication between departments to resolve operational challenges. Leadership of Continuous Improvement Initiatives Champion lean manufacturing and Six Sigma initiatives to drive process improvements. Lead cross-functional teams in identifying and implementing efficiency enhancements. Reporting & Documentation Maintain accurate records of production output, labor hours, and inventory usage. Prepare and present reports on shop performance, KPIs, and improvement initiatives. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or a related technical field; relevant certifications or technical training also considered. Minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in a machining or manufacturing environment, with 5+ years in a leadership or managerial capacity. Deep understanding of machining processes, CNC equipment, cutting tools, and precision manufacturing standards. Proven experience in machine shop automation, including implementation and optimization of automated systems. Proficiency in production planning software (e.g., ERP, MRP) and inventory management systems. Demonstrated leadership excellence, with strong interpersonal, team building, and conflict resolution skills. Adept at LEAN Manufacturing, 5S methodology, and Six Sigma principles to drive continuous improvement and waste reduction. Ability to analyze production metrics and implement strategic changes to improve throughput and efficiency. Strong project management skills with the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and manage complex timelines. Committed to employee development, with a track record of mentoring, training, and upskilling machinists and shop personnel. Exceptional communication skillsable to effectively collaborate across departments and present performance updates to leadership. Familiarity with safety regulations (OSHA, ISO) and ability to foster a culture of safety and accountability on the shop floor. Experience managing capital equipment procurement and maintenance schedules.
