Licensed Practical Nurse
As a Licensed Practical Nurse under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you would be involved in the treatment of patients/residents. You would administer medications and injections; perform tube feedings; hang Ivs; collect blood samples if certified for venipuncture; provide colostomy care; observe patients and report changes in their condition; take and record temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure; obtain specimens for analysis and perform other medical procedures as ordered by a physician. You would prepare and apply simple dressings; bathe and feed patients/residents; and care for patient/residents and their quarters by performing such tasks as making beds, changing linen, lifting and moving patients/residents and caring for their personal effects. Provision of nursing services may take place within a state operated facility or community based residential or program setting. Minimum qualifications: must have one of the following: a license and current registration to practice as a practical nurse in New York State; OR a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State; OR an application on file for a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State. (Must be appointed immediately following graduation from an approved school of practical nursing in New York State to qualify under this option.) Note: If you are appointed with either qualification "2" or "3," you must obtain your license within one year of the date your limited permit was issued or steps will be taken to remove you from the position. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. There is a $4,000 geographical pay differential not included in the above salary.
