Mechanical Engineering Postdoctoral Scholar

The Biodesign Laboratory under Prof. Shuvo Roy is seeking an experienced researcher/scholar of exceptional promise for a postdoctoral fellow position with expertise in mechanical engineering. The postdoctoral fellow will work on The Kidney Project, a nationwide effort to develop a surgically implantable device combining cell therapy with convective filtration for total renal replacement therapy. They will also have opportunities to teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students, write scientific papers and technical articles, present research findings at conferences, develop and submit grant applications, engage with patient advocacy groups, and participate in planning for technology transfer through entrepreneurship activities. Background:

The research laboratory of Prof. Shuvo Roy in the Department of Bioengineering & Therapeutic Sciences at UCSF is developing next-generation medical devices by linking engineering innovations with basic science discoveries. Projects include the development of the implantable bioartificial kidney, an artificial placenta oxygenator, and intravascular bioartificial pancreas. The Roy Lab applies microfabrication techniques, microfluidics, nanotechnology, biomaterials, wireless technology, electronics, cell and molecular biology, and computer science to address pressing medical problems. The lab collaborates with clinicians, engineers, scientists, regulatory and reimbursement experts, patient advocacy groups, and the investor community to translate scientific breakthroughs into clinical solutions. Required Skills:

Candidates should have enthusiasm, motivation, independent thinking, and be knowledgeable in mechanical design and prototype construction. They should be capable of building test setups, developing complex assemblies, and evaluating failure modes. Ideal Candidates:

Will have a passion for scientific research, willingness to learn and integrate knowledge across therapeutic areas, and possess teamwork, listening, strategic thinking, and excellent English communication skills. Key Requirements:

PhD or equivalent in mechanical engineering, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, or related fields Record of scientific publications and/or conference presentations Proficiency in CAD design and reproducible prototype construction Experience with automated data collection and analysis Preferred Requirements:

Familiarity with SolidWorks and ANSYS (Mechanical, Fluent) Experience with CNC machining and 3D printing Knowledge of microscopy techniques (light, electron, atomic force) Experience with fluid transport models Knowledge of implantable biomedical devices The successful candidate will be based in the Roy Laboratory on UCSF's Mission Bay campus. UC San Francisco values diversity and excellence. We are an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status.
