The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District) is a regional government agency dedicated to achieving clean air to protect public health and the environment. The Air District regulates industrial facilities and runs outreach and incentive programs to promote clean air choices. The jurisdiction covers all of seven counties—Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Napa—and parts of southwestern Solano and southern Sonoma. The Air District is currently accepting applications for the position of Principal Air Quality Engineer in the Engineering Division. This is a full-time, represented position with one (1) vacancy. About the Position The AB617 Principal Engineer (AB617 Role) will join a high-performing team working closely with communities most impacted by air pollution. You will contribute to developing and implementing community-scale air quality plans in partnership with staff, community members, partner organizations, local governments, the California Air Resources Board, and other agencies. You will leverage your knowledge of permitting and risk reduction programs to lead engagement efforts, analyze emission data, participate in community meetings, and develop strategies for emission reduction and environmental justice. The Principal Air Quality Engineer may also handle complex tasks such as processing permits for intricate facilities, analyzing emissions data, evaluating program effectiveness, and leading or participating in sensitive projects. You may present technical information to various audiences and represent the Air District in working groups. Developing guidance on emissions calculations is also part of the role. Engineering Division The division assesses permit applications, reviews renewals, and provides technical support related to air pollutant emissions. It also implements the Facility Risk Reduction Program aimed at reducing health risks from existing facilities. Key activities include: Verifying emissions inventories Developing databases and managing data Creating or amending regulations Strategic planning Dispersion modeling and health risk assessments Facility risk reduction and toxic air programs Supporting communities in emission reduction planning
