Principal AI/ML Engineer

Responsibilities Lead the development of technology and platforms for the company's AI/ML needs, ensuring functionality, reliability, performance, and flexibility. Design architecture and lead implementation of AI/ML infrastructure, platforms, and services. Challenge existing solutions and drive improvements to serve the broad risk area of Wex effectively. Guide your team in leveraging data and AI tools for high productivity and quality, demonstrating thought leadership. Partner with senior engineers across Wex to understand business needs and craft technical solutions. Collaborate with information security teams to ensure data security and privacy. Work with solutions architecture and product teams on AI/ML platform integrations. Engage with external vendors to evaluate complementary technologies and services. Create and manage roadmaps, project plans, and commitments. Report on development, quality, operations, and performance metrics to management. Drive the technical vision for AI/ML infrastructure aligned with business needs, collaborating closely with Data Science, ML Engineering, and reporting teams. Set high standards, provide technical guidance, mentorship, and foster continuous learning and innovation within the team. Attract top talent and promote an inclusive, productive environment. Establish clear, measurable quality goals using data-driven approaches. Partner with security and SRE teams to ensure security, SLOs, and error budgets are met. Take financial responsibility for your team. Ensure accountability and quality results through OKRs. Advise senior leadership on complex technical and business initiatives, leading teams to successful outcomes. Provide strategic leadership on business initiatives leveraging deep technical and industry expertise. Qualifications & Experience Deep technical expertise in software engineering leadership capable of delivering business value. 15-20 years of experience in large-scale software design and development. Strong skills in programming, with willingness to learn Java and Python. Experience in building supervised and unsupervised machine learning models; reinforcement learning and LLM experience are pluses. Knowledge of distributed computing frameworks like Ray and Spark. Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, and cloud services like AWS and Azure. Deep understanding of CI/CD, big data platforms, and AI/ML-specific architectures. Proven leadership in guiding teams using agile practices, with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Understanding of payment industry is a plus. Mentorship abilities and strong communication skills. Educational background in Computer Science or related fields; advanced degrees preferred.
