Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist Laboratory Testing Personnel supportphysicians by conducting various tests for disease prevention, diagnosis, andtreatment, adhering to specimen protocols, documenting results accurately, and notifyingcaregivers promptly. They identify and communicate abnormalities swiftly,calibrate instruments, troubleshoot problems, maintain detailed records, complywith policies, and ensure quality control rigorously.Medical Laboratory TechnicianRequirements Associate Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college ortechnical school accredited by NAACLS. Certification as a Medical LaboratoryTechnician (MLT) with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP),National Credentialing Agency for laboratory personnel (NCA) or AmericanMedical Technologist (AMT).Personnelreceiving certification as a MLT after January 1, 2004 must recertify every three years. To obtainrecertification from ASCP, NCA, or AMT, 36 points of approved continuingeducation over a period of three years must be documented and submitted to thecertifying agency.Medical Technologist Requirements Bachelor's degree in Clinical LaboratoryScience or Medical Technology from an accredited institution (NAACLS Certified)or Bachelor's degree with a major in biological or chemical sciences andcompletion of "approved laboratory experience" requirements forMedical Technologist certification as designated by the American Society ofClinical Pathologist, (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for laboratorypersonnel (NCA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).Certification as a Medical Technologist(MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) with the American Society ofClinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for laboratorypersonnel (NCA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).Personnelreceiving certification as an MT after January 1, 2004 must recertify every three years.
