Base pay range $120,000.00/yr - $220,000.00/yr We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controls Engineer to design, develop, and optimize control systems for our hydrogen injection system. The ideal candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and superior performance of our systems. Newlight's mission is to accelerate the transition of the maritime industry to sustainable energy by making sustainable shipping affordable and focusing on the current fleet with hydrogen integration. We develop a plugin for ships that reduces fuel consumption and emissions by injecting hydrogen as a dual fuel for existing engines. Responsibilities: Design and develop control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems, to meet project specifications and requirements. Program, test, and troubleshoot control algorithms and logic for automation systems. Integrate sensors, actuators, and other hardware components into the control systems, including DAQ systems for different engines on vessels. Perform system diagnostics and implement improvements to enhance performance and reliability. Create detailed technical documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and user manuals. Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and company protocols. Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and maintenance phases. Maintain theoretical and practical understanding of fuel properties, combustion processes, pollutant formation, and working knowledge of burner/combustor designs. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field. 5+ years of experience in designing and implementing control systems. Proficiency in programming PLCs (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or similar). Proficiency in Simulink, HIL, and Matlab. Experience with HMI and SCADA system development. Strong knowledge of control theory, automation protocols, and system integration. Hands-on experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, PROFIBUS). Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively in a team environment. Strong background in mechanical and electrical systems. Experience with CAD software (e.g., NX, SolidWorks). Knowledge in developing ML algorithms. This role requires on-site presence to facilitate rapid iteration cycles with the combustion engineer. Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with 2-stroke marine engines. Background in mechanical and electrical systems, especially in maritime or automotive sectors. Expertise in hydrogen technology and hybrid systems. Passion for environmental sustainability and commitment to maritime decarbonization. Experience working with Python/PyTorch, Next.js, LabVIEW, and MATLAB. Why Join Us?
