We are seeking a skilled Mainframe Software Engineer to join our Consumer Loan Servicing team. In this role, you will design, develop, maintain, and enhance mainframe applications utilizing technologies such as JCL, COBOL, VSAM, EZTRIEVE, File Manager, and IBM IDz (including zConnect). Experience working with web servers, application containers, and CI/CD pipelines is preferred—particularly leveraging GitLab and OpenShift together. You will collaborate closely with other developers, product owners, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality, efficient software solutions that support critical business processes. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, passionate about mainframe development, and thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Utilize GitLab and OpenShift to support automated builds, testing, and deployments.

Design, code, test, and debug mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, VSAM, and related technologies.

Enhance and maintain existing applications to meet evolving business requirements.

Implement and maintain integrations between mainframe applications and distributed systems, including through zConnect.

Work with APIs, application containers, and web servers to support hybrid architecture.

Analyze and improve program performance and system efficiency.

Conduct root cause analysis for performance issues and apply corrective measures.

Contribute to the refinement of CI/CD pipelines for mainframe environments.

Write and execute unit tests to ensure code quality and reliability.

Participate in code reviews and enforce best practices in coding standards.

Ensure applications meet financial industry regulatory requirements and security standards.

Maintain audit trails and support compliance documentation.

Partner with product owners, business analysts, and other developers to gather requirements and deliver solutions.

Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and four to seven years of experience or equivalent education and software engineering training or experience

In-depth knowledge in information systems and ability to identify, apply, and implement IT best practices

Understanding of key business processes and competitive strategies related to the IT function

Ability to plan and manage projects and solve complex problems by applying best practices

Ability to provide direction and mentor less experienced teammates. Ability to interpret and convey complex, difficult, or sensitive information

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or related degree and eight years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

Banking or financial services experience.

Knowledge of specific applications, technology platforms, programming languages, systems, or business segments

Knowledge of one or more of the following: Solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, and software design with strong analytical and debugging skills

Professional experience building high-quality apps or services from the ground up and scaling at an enterprise level

Experience with Mainframe technologies, such as JCL, COBOL, VSAM, EZTRIEVE, File Manager, IBM IDz including zConnect

Experience using web servers, application containers, CI/CD Pipelines, Gitlab and OpenShift

Strong understanding of SOA and/or Open API methodologies and service architecture including headless testing using Webscarab or SOAPUI

Solid knowledge of relational database design and development (SQL, stored procedures, data modeling)
