The Sr. Underwriter is primarily responsible for underwriting new and renewal business in accordance with all company Underwriting guidelines, procedures, and service standards. This role involves interacting with MMIA agents, account service consultants, and independent agents to assist in selling, retaining, and servicing PSL and HCS business.

Specific Duties:

  1. Handle all duties within authority level and assigned territory, which includes large and complex accounts, insuring physicians, facilities, and hospital liability risks.
  2. Modify risk and coverage conditions on new or renewal business within limits of delegated authority, adhering to established standards while maintaining production, retention, and profitability goals.
  3. Ensure consistent implementation of underwriting guidelines for proper risk identification, assessment, documentation, and management.
  4. Assist in managing results through proactive input on pricing structures, terms, and risk assumptions.
  5. Manage accounts with loss-sensitive features such as deductibles, SIRs, and profit sharing plans.
  6. Investigate and determine insurability of new applicants, analyze claim information, and rate and classify risks appropriately.
  7. Manage renewal portfolios, making changes based on claim experience, exposure, market conditions, etc.
  8. Adhere to company guidelines and protocols regarding underwriting and documentation.
  9. Review red flag files, Account Summary History forms, and Actuarial Analyses with the Capital Solutions team.
  10. Interact with agents and brokers, collaborating with other departments to ensure optimal working relationships.
  11. Assist the Head of Capital Solutions with special projects requiring advanced underwriting experience.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • University degree with a quantitative focus.
  • Seven to ten years of casualty underwriting experience, especially in medical professional liability.
  • Expertise in underwriting large and complex accounts.
  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, and knowledge of policy terms, classification, rating, and analytics.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
