SENIOR CLINICAL LAB ANIMAL VETERINARIAN
Description Assists the ARP Director and Associate Director with overall management of the ARP veterinary medical and surgical programs and directly supervises professional and technical staff. Provides clinical and surgical care of research animals and directs the animal health surveillance program and oversees the importation, exportation, and quarantines of animals from non-commercial sources; animal studies requiring special containment; and the animal enrichment program. Advises researchers about rodent colony management and rodent pathogens. Duties & Responsibilities: Provide clinical and surgical medical care to research animals Obtain and evaluate history of veterinary medical and surgical cases Perform physical assessments and develop a diagnostic sampling and therapeutic management proposal of the cases Establish a management protocol and initiate treatment Provide on-call weekend and emergency care Supervise one or more animal health technician(s) Monitor, schedule, and assure coverage of responsibilities Recommend hiring, terminating, and promoting employees and conduct performance evaluations Perform or assist health assessment and review pertinent test results on all proposed animal shipments to and from UAB campus Discuss colony/herd history or individual health of animals with veterinary and husbandry staff, research personnel, or representatives from the facility supplying animals and approve receipt of the qualified animals Supervise and assist in the quarantine of animals of unknown health status and authorize release from quarantine when appropriate assurances have been confirmed May provide health assessments for animals prior to intrastate and international shipment Communicate to facilitate shipment and oversee transportation arrangements Maintain appropriate records and assist in report preparations Review animal health records of completion required by regulations Assist in the preparation of required regulatory reports Serve as primary or alternative member of IACUC Review animal use requests and consult with faculty and research staff on topics related to animal research Assure compliance of all animal use requests with accepted veterinary practices and regulatory requirements of the USDA and other applicable regulatory agencies and institutional policies Prepare and present lectures, seminars, and workshops on a variety of animal care and use topics for UAB staff, students, and community organizations Manage ARP and IACUC veterinary medical and surgical program to assure the health and well-being of humane care of research animals Participate in the development and writing of grants, program descriptions, and scientific publications Interact with regulatory agents and other guests as required Perform other duties as assigned Annual Salary:
$120,445 - $195,725 (commensurate with experience) Qualifications Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and six (6) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently credentialed as an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Diplomate by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or similar board veterinary specialty (i.e., American College of Veterinary Surgeons or American College Veterinary Pathologist) preferred. State of Alabama Veterinary License must be obtained within two (2) years from hire date.
