Upon satisfactory completion of P.O.S.T. academy and meeting other requirements as a recruit, a Police Officer's salary is $91,385.96 - $116,634.21 annually .

This is a non-sworn, non-represented, civilian classification, designed to train police officer candidates for eligibility as sworn officers, with promotion contingent upon successful completion of police academy training and other requirements. Police recruits attend a basic police recruit academy certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.). The position requires full-time attendance at a P.O.S.T. certified academy. Work may also include performing non-sworn police-related tasks during non-academy hours. Academy progress is reviewed through the formal evaluation system of the police academy, and non-academy work is reviewed via reports, inspections, and observations. Upon graduation, recruits become sworn police officers with full salary, safety status, and benefits. All new hires must pass a 12-month probationary period to attain permanent police officer status.

The City of Signal Hill will accept a P.O.S.T. Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) T-Score of 46 or higher taken within 6 months of application. A copy of your PELLETB T-score must be submitted with your application.

The City does not have, nor do we recommend, any study materials.

Essential Functions As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include but are not limited to:

Attending a P.O.S.T. certified basic police academy to obtain formal training in police work related to public safety and protection of life and property.

Performing non-sworn work in various Police Department areas such as jail operations, communication center, property and evidence handling, service desk, and community relations.

Learning to patrol, answer calls, conduct investigations, interview victims and witnesses, and handle complaints including domestic disturbances and ordinance violations.

Enforcing traffic laws, conducting accident investigations, controlling traffic, performing crowd control, and assisting in crime prevention and juvenile delinquency control.

Learning procedures for evidence processing, report writing, serving warrants, testifying in court, and cooperating with other law enforcement agencies.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Valid Class C California driver license, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance.

Desirable: Completion of 60 college units in criminal justice or related field.

Other Requirements

U.S. citizen or resident alien who has applied for citizenship.

At least 21 years old upon completion of the police academy.

Uncorrected vision at least 20/70, corrected to 20/20, with normal depth perception and color vision.

Normal hearing in both ears.

Proper proportion of height and weight.

Ability to meet physical requirements as established by authorities.
