The Chief Estimator plays a pivotal role in overseeing the estimation process for various projects, ensuring accurate cost calculations aligned with the company's financial goals. This position requires a deep understanding of construction methods, materials, and market trends to provide precise estimates supporting project bids and proposals. The Chief Estimator will lead a team of estimators, fostering collaboration and innovation to enhance accuracy and efficiency. Additionally, this role involves regular communication with project managers, clients, and subcontractors to clarify project requirements and address discrepancies. Ultimately, the Chief Estimator contributes to the company's profitability and competitive edge through meticulous cost management and strategic planning.
Overall Focus
Oversee diverse ground-up and renovation projects in Preconstruction, managing project flow and scope effectively.
Lead the Preconstruction / Estimating staff in preparing detailed estimates across project phases, including conceptual, schematic, and GMP calculations.
Manage workloads to meet deadlines, overseeing schedules of self and team members.
Prepare and analyze cost models, maintaining a cost history database for budgeting and estimate development during preconstruction.
Stay updated on industry trends, implementing practices like Lean, VDC, and IPD with operations teams.
Build and maintain relationships with owners, architects, and subcontractors to support project pursuits.
Ensure staff compliance with company estimating and corporate policies, maintaining high professional standards.
Project Management
Manage a pipeline of diverse projects in Preconstruction.
Oversee the efforts of the Preconstruction / Estimating staff in preparing detailed estimates.
Manage workloads and schedules to meet deadlines.
Prepare and analyze cost models during preconstruction and bidding phases.
Collaborate with the operations team to assemble General Conditions.
Strategic Planning and Relationship Management
Develop and maintain a cost history database for budgeting and estimating.
Stay informed on industry trends, technology, methods, costs, and building codes.
Identify opportunities for process improvements using progressive practices.
Stakeholder Relations and Policy Adherence
Foster relationships with owners, architects, and subcontractors.
Develop and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures.
Communication and Collaboration
Participate in stakeholder meetings.
Hire and develop preconstruction and estimating staff.
Maintain professionalism in all interactions.
Risk Management and Documentation
Ensure competitive bids and proposals.
Identify and mitigate risks during preconstruction and bidding.
Manage documentation and correspondence related to preconstruction.
Conduct project qualification, solicitation, and pricing efforts.
Maintain flow of preconstruction information and documentation.
Engage in industry, client, and community relations to enhance company image.
Review owner contracts for cost implications and risks.

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and at least 15 years of estimating experience.
Minimum 5 years as a Preconstruction Director or Chief Estimator supervising at least eight team members.
Expertise in cost estimating across project stages and familiarity with RFP/Q processes.
Knowledge of construction methods, purchasing, negotiations, and personnel management.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and estimation software (e.g., Timberline, On-Screen Takeoff, BIM).
Experience with GMP and CMAR contracting models is advantageous.
