Role description: Arcadis is seeking a Principal Environmental Planner to take on a leadership role supporting environmental planning for utility infrastructure maintenance and repair programs for our Northern California utility clients. Our California Energy Transition team seeks an experienced environmental planner/project manager with at least ten years’ experience to join our team of multidisciplinary planners, biologists, and cultural resource specialists. In this role, you will support technical planning guidance, maintain and develop positive client relationships, and manage projects on schedule and within budget.

Role accountabilities: As a Principal Environmental Planner, you will apply your technical and business knowledge to develop creative, effective, and economical solutions to project issues. You will lead our California planning team, interacting with project managers, directors, and principals, as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team. You will also supervise, train, and mentor mid-level and junior staff.

You should have a strong understanding of state and federal permit requirements and familiarity with local/county jurisdiction and California agency notification requirements. You will develop strategic planning and permitting strategies for larger projects and conduct or lead site reviews as needed. Your excellent technical writing and communication skills will be essential for providing guidance and technical review of project documents.

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Planning, Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, or related field

Minimum of 15 years of experience in the environmental field, with at least 12 years as a consultant

Experience preparing CEQA (and NEPA) documents, including Initial Studies and Environmental Assessments

Knowledge of California and federal resource agency permit requirements (USFWS, CDFW, USACE, California Coastal Commission, RWQCB/SWRCB) and local land use regulations

Experience and leadership in planning, permitting, and supporting infrastructure projects (utility, renewables, water, sewer, oil and gas, etc.)

Project management experience including task management, client coordination, and financial oversight

Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree in related fields and experience with utility infrastructure siting and licensing, land use applications, and CEQA documents for the California Public Utilities Commission.
