April 2025 POSITION SUMMARY
This professional-level position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to ensure energy projects are developed and sited to minimize impacts on wildlife and habitats. The Senior Energy and Biodiversity Policy Specialist advances Defenders' conservation mission, strategic plan, and priorities. The role involves collaboration with departments such as Government Relations, Biodiversity Law Center, Center for Conservation Innovation, Species Conservation and Coexistence, and Communications. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop goals and objectives for energy and biodiversity initiatives. Collaborate with policy experts, attorneys, scientists, lobbyists, communications specialists, and field advocates to oppose efforts that weaken environmental statutes and regulations related to fossil fuel development on federal lands and waters. Develop positions on legislative and administrative proposals concerning energy project siting and development. Coordinate internal energy work and interdisciplinary approaches to achieve objectives. Represent wildlife interests in private sector energy siting efforts. Act as Defenders' representative on national energy and biodiversity issues, engaging with officials, media, members, donors, and the public through meetings, hearings, press events, and coalitions. Research and produce policy papers, reports, blogs, websites, alerts, and publications for advocacy, coordinating with other departments as needed. Travel may be required for this role. Perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred. Experience:
Minimum of 6 years relevant experience; 3 years supervisory experience if applicable. Equivalent education and experience may be considered. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
