Position Overview
The Lactation Consultant plays a crucial role in supporting and educating lactating women during their hospital stay and in the community. This position involves comprehensive lactation assessments, management, and consultations for both inpatients and outpatients, while adhering to the highest professional standards set by the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) and the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide expert lactation management and counseling based on evidence-based research and the ILCA Standards of Practice within an interdisciplinary team environment.
2. Create a supportive learning environment for mothers, ensuring confidentiality and effective lactation management for mother-infant pairs.
3. Actively engage in departmental activities such as education, decision-making, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and departmental efficiency.
4. Mentor and educate nursing and medical students, and participate in professional presentations to promote lactation services.
5. Carry out various responsibilities including daily patient rounding, outpatient consultations, prenatal education, discharge planning, follow-up calls, and equipment rental and sales.
6. Communicate effectively with peers, medical staff, and other departments to ensure coordinated patient care.
7. Attend at least three continuing education presentations annually to maintain professional knowledge and skills.
8. Undertake other related tasks as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the Lactation Services Department.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited institution is required.
Experience:
A minimum of 1-2 years of experience as an IBCLC is required, or a combination of nursing and lactation consultant experience. Licenses and Certifications:
Current RN license in Maryland or Compact State is required. Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is required. Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work collaboratively in a professional setting. Excellent counseling, communication, and public relations skills are essential. This role offers a competitive salary range of $36.00 - $54.97.
