The VISN 22 Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS) is seeking a Histopathology Technician (Advanced) for the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and Education: One year of experience in a healthcare field demonstrating ability to perform the work or understanding of the work, such as a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) or health technician. OR - Education: Four academic years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with relevant courses such as biological science or chemistry. OR - Successful completion of two academic years above high school with at least 24 semester hours in Chemistry and/or biological sciences, plus a 12-month program in histopathology or cytotechnology. OR - Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education qualifying for entry level, such as six months of healthcare experience plus two years of relevant education, or an associate's degree in a healthcare-related field. Grandfathering Provision applies to current VHA employees in this occupation who meet certain criteria. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Grade Determinations: GS-7 (Advanced) Experience: One year of experience at the next lower grade level. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Demonstrate skills in applying anatomic pathology principles, providing technical oversight, validating methodologies, troubleshooting, and using independent judgment. Assignment: Responsible for performing difficult specialized procedures, troubleshooting instruments, and developing new staining methods. Higher duties involve significant scope, complexity, and variety. Preferred Experience:

Rotate through trained areas, working weekends and holidays as needed. Perform and oversee complex histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical procedures. Recognize deviations, analyze, and correct problems, and communicate critical results. Develop and modify staining methods, troubleshoot instruments, and ensure quality control. Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure biosafety, and adhere to regulations. Assist with CAP self-evaluation, train staff, and communicate effectively. Organize work, set priorities, and perform additional duties as assigned. Work Schedule:
