Python/IDL Developer

Location: Springfield, VA Position Description: We are seeking a mid-level developer to support advanced research and development efforts within NGA's Spectral/Remote Sensing group. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in scientific computing and a background in remote sensing or spectral phenomenology, particularly in the context of Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI), Multispectral Imaging (MSI), and related modalities. You'll work alongside government scientists, researchers, and analysts to prototype, refine, and optimize tools that support the exploitation of spectral data. The ideal candidate brings proficiency in Python and IDL, with additional experience in MATLAB and familiarity with R&D or laboratory-style development workflows. Key Responsibilities: Develop, test, and optimize algorithms for spectral data exploitation using Python, IDL, and MATLAB Support the analysis and visualization of HSI, MSI, and other spectral datasets Integrate custom tools into mission workflows and prototype environments Collaborate with government researchers and analysts to translate scientific objectives into technical solutions Document code and provide support for transitioning R&D efforts into operational environments Participate in technical discussions, design reviews, and data evaluation activities Required Qualifications: Active TS/SCI clearance with ability to obtain a CI Poly (must have) Proficiency in Python and IDL (non-negotiable) Experience with OPIR, hyperspectral/multispectral imaging (HSI/MSI) and related spectral data types (non-negotiable) Background in remote sensing, image processing, or a related geospatial discipline (non-negotiable) Working knowledge of MATLAB Ability to work in a collaborative R&D setting with shifting priorities and exploratory goals 4 years of experience in scientific or data-focused software development B.A./B.S. Degree Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience supporting NGA or other IC customers Familiarity with NGA data formats, toolchains, or spectral exploitation workflows Background in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field Experience working with large, high-dimensional imagery datasets
