Position Summary:

New York City Public School (NYCPS) The Division of Family, Community and Student Empowerment includes a diverse portfolio of offices, including Family and Community Engagement, Students in Temporary Housing and Foster Care, Community Schools and Strategic Partnerships, Attendance Research and Innovations, Office of School Wellness Programs and Office of Language Access. These teams work together to assist the Chancellor in serving the largest school system in the country, composed of approximately 1 million students and ensure that parents, students, and all New York City communities have enhanced opportunities for support with a focus on family empowerment, community support and wellness and language access for NYCPS. Improved cooperative relationships with parents, superintendents, principals, teachers and stakeholders in support of public-school students and families help to advance student achievement and empower authentic voice and feedback to NYCPS.

The NYCPS Office of Language Access (OLA) is hiring a Albanian Translation Team Leader to provide guidance and expertise on all matters related to language-specific communications produced by NYCPS. While the primary focus of this role is overseeing the translation of written documents, responsibilities may also include supporting the translation project management team with coordinating project distribution, translating documents outside of regular work hours and supporting the coordination of interpretation services as needed. Key Relationships:

OLA internal project management and language teams NYCPS, external (Albanian) providers, and NYCPSNYCPS offices who create/provide parent-facing communications.

Responsibilities

Collaborates with NYCPSs vendors to manage and maintain language-specific term bases and style guides and identifies opportunities to enhance the quality and consistency of translated documents. Determines accurate translations of critical NYCPS terms using reputable language resources, with consideration of the target audience and relevant design/media factors. Leads the team, ensuring quality control through the consistent use of standardized terminology and adherence to style guides. Coordinates and facilitates training sessions for the team. Produces high-level reports on the teams productivity and performance. Conducts research on policies, resources, and best practices to support efficient and effective team workflows. Implements policies, systems, and protocols to ensure cohesiveness and consistency across all translated NYCPS documents. Serves as the final reviewer of all key translated NYCPS documents in the assigned language, including content produced by both internal translation teams and external vendors. Bilingual editing (i.e., revision), monolingual editing (i.e., review), or both, depending on the document. Translates NYCPS documents from English into the assigned language as needed. Represents OLA at community meetings and public events on matters related to language teams cultural and linguistic work. Oversees the provision and quality of interpretation services, including those delivered by vendors.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in 1 above.

Preferred

Familiarity with the NYCPS system. Two or more years of experience as a translator and copy editor. Ability to function and meet aggressive deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Strong logistical and long-term planning experience. Ability to lead a group and create a collaborative setting. Experience with customer service and problem-solving. Excellent writing and presentation skills. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Strong Microsoft Office 365 applications skills. Knowledge of SDL Trados. Experience working with virtual platforms, e.g., Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc. Available to address rush translations of critical communications. Provides simultaneous and consecutive English interpretation when needed.

Salary : $82,000 - $85,774

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
