POSITION SUMMARY:

Receives patients, correctly identifies patients, obtains blood and urine samples, prepares and packages specimens for transport, performs clerical and registration functions. Works under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services, Laboratory Manager, and Lab Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assures Phlebotomy and work areas are adequately stocked and kept neat and orderly. Prepares samples for transport to the main lab and brings emergency and timed requests to the immediate attention of appropriate staff. Performs patient registration. Communicates with laboratory administration in regards to unusual patient situations, customer comments or suggestions. Registers and orders tests on patients as needed following all current procedures completely including, but not limited to, ensuring scripts are scanned into computer system daily. Obtains diagnosis for test(s) requested from patient’s physician or authorized representative when diagnosis is not on script. Ensures specimen collection and labeling is complete and accurate. Performs EKGs as assigned. If Medicare does not cover the test(s) ordered under its medical necessity guidelines, obtains ABN (advanced beneficiary notice) from patient before obtaining specimen following established procedure. Arranges workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency in areas of phlebotomy and processing as assigned. Provides patient care in a safe, effective and efficient manner, following all organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Uses professional and courteous customer service in all interactions with co-workers, providers, patients. Remains calm in stressful situations. When assigned, acts as a responsible driver and adheres to all traffic laws. Performs other duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent. Depending on work assignment, valid driver’s license with clean driving record may be required. 1 year phlebotomy or patient care experience.
