General Summary
The Attending Veterinarian works under the direct guidance of the General Manager. This position provides leadership, along with the oversight and daily management of the veterinary service team. The goal of this department is to collaborate with and provide expert support to research scientists in the discovery, characterization, and development of novel therapeutic products for human diseases. We are dedicated to providing excellent animal care, progressive veterinary medicine, and expert lab animal science knowledge. The Attending Veterinarian has direct program authority and responsibility for the animal care and use program.
Responsibilities
Major Responsibilities
- Defines and implements the laboratory animal science program including veterinary care and animal care, providing administrative direction in compliance with all regulations and policies, nationally and locally.
- Serves as Attending Veterinarian, overseeing the animal care and use program daily, ensuring compliance with company policies, guidelines, SOPs, USDA standards, and regulations.
- Ensures documentation requirements are met.
- Partners with research teams to provide guidance on protocols and procedures for efficient use of laboratory animals.
- Institutes methods to prevent, control, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries.
- Provides expertise on animal health and welfare, including anesthesia, analgesia, recognition and treatment of pain and distress, and review of medical intervention plans.
- Ensures daily observation of all animals for health and well-being.
- Provides expertise on animal and personnel health status control, including vaccinations, zoonosis control, euthanasia methods, etc.
- Manages pathogen exclusion lists and collaborates on biosecurity measures.
- Oversees quarantine programs, vendor management, and animal behavior/enrichment programs.
- Manages veterinary staff and provides training, ensuring documentation and proficiency.
- Builds and leads teams, manages facilities, and may perform surgeries or provide anesthesia support.
- Serves on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
- Provides emergency coverage for animal care during weekends and holidays.
- Participates in policy development, SOPs, and maintains AAALAC accreditation standards.
- Stays current on study protocols, animal care, and treatments.
- Ensures compliance with all regulations, health, and safety policies.
- Partners with key stakeholders across the organization.
- Performs other duties as required.

- Exercises independent judgment in solving emergency problems related to animal care.
- Evaluates risks and opportunities to develop effective solutions aligned with organizational goals.
Planning
- Anticipates company needs, organizes information, and develops policies and procedures.
- Provides strategic direction for resource utilization, space planning, and equipment requirements.
- Implements changes to the animal care program as an expert.
Supervision Exercised
- Supervises veterinarians and animal care leadership, providing technical oversight.
- Reviews veterinary care programs to ensure compliance and quality of animal care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited veterinary school and 10 years of related experience, or
- Certification as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and 10 years of related experience, or
- Equivalent education deemed appropriate by APHIS, with 10 years of relevant experience.
- License to practice Veterinary Medicine in California.
- DACLAM eligibility preferred.
- Experience with biosafety, crisis management, and occupational health & safety training.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to work independently and in teams, with knowledge of study protocols and IACUC processes.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, FTP, and internet applications.
Physical Requirements
- Proof of measles vaccination or titers for personnel working with NHPs.
- TB testing results or testing prior to contact with NHPs; annual screening required.
- Avoid contact with rodents/small animals outside the facility.
- Ability to lift 50-100 lbs, operate equipment, and handle hazardous materials.
- Visual acuity for handling chemicals and biologics.
- Wear PPE as per SOPs.
- Ability to withstand high ambient temperatures.
- Reasonable accommodation for disabilities.
Environmental Working Conditions
- Exposure to disinfectants, chemicals, biologics, dander, and dust.
- Work in laboratory conditions with potential hazards.
Pay Range
$180,000 - $250,000, commensurate with experience.
