GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: To perform machining tasks as directed by their supervisor utilizing the CNC Vertical Milling Center (main responsibility), Bridgeport Mill, Engine Lathe, and CNC Lathe as well as other Machine Shop support equipment (i.e. grinder, belt sander, cold saw, etc.).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The duties and responsibilities listed below apply to all levels of CNC Machinists. Each level of CNC Machinist has additional duties and responsibilities listed.

  • Updates set-up and tooling sheets as required, maintaining the VMC logbook for shift turnover, documenting travelers and Discrepant Materials Report (DMR).
  • Supports and exhibits the focus of zero defects as well as right-the-first-time attitude.
  • Inspects work utilizing basic inspection equipment (calipers, micrometers, depth gage, etc.).
  • Provides suggestions or advice to maximize the efficiency of Machine Shop.
  • Maintains a clean work area and ensures strict adherence to the 5S Standards.
  • Accurately adjusts machine settings to complete tasks according to specifications.
  • Uses various machine shop support equipment including Saws, Belt Sanders, Grinders, Overhead Cranes, and Drill Press.
  • Follows FOD (foreign object prevention) practices.
  • Complies with established safety directives.
  • Complies with established QMS procedures.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

CNC Machinist I: Works under direct supervision.

CNC Machinist II: Works under general supervision. Oversees operators and provides setup support. Responsible for generating process improvements.

CNC Machinist III: Works very independently under minimal supervision. Responsible for training lower-level machinists. Responsible for generating process improvements. Responsible for machining production "MS" Tooling.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Required: Each successive level of CNC Machinist builds on the identified education and experience listed for the previous level(s) CNC Machinists.

CNC Machinist I: Requires high school education or equivalent. 2-3 years of hands-on experience in a CNC Machine Shop. Typical qualifications for this level include a basic level of experience with: Math - solid understanding of fractions and decimals. Documentation Materials Knowledge Tooling/Molds Equipment Process Quality Safety May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

CNC Machinist II: 5+ years hands-on experience in a CNC Machine Shop. Typical qualifications for this level include an intermediate level of experience with: Math - functional understanding and practical application of trigonometry Documentation Materials Knowledge Tooling/Molds Equipment Process Quality Safety

CNC Machinist III: 8+ years hands-on experience in composite manufacturing CNC Machine Shop. Proven experience handling and machining various composite materials. Proven experience handling and machining various honeycomb metal bond assemblies. Typical qualifications for this level include an advanced level of experience with: Math - functional to advanced understanding and practical application of trigonometry Documentation Materials Knowledge Tooling/Molds Equipment Process Quality Safety Preferred, ALL: Experience with aircraft machined parts a definite plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time. Standing, walking, bending, reaching and working from slightly elevated surface. Use of hand tools. Employee may generate, handle, manage, or work around hazardous materials and hazardous wastes. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds in accordance with KUAS General Safety Training guidelines.
