Civil Service or Non Civil Service: Civil Service

Job Summary: Administers written and visual acuity tests and conducts road performance tests to determine applicant's eligibility for all types of drivers' licenses but primarily for Category 4 and commercial driver license Category A through C and applicable endorsements; participates in motor vehicle driver licensing activities involving applications for license Category 1 through 3; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

  • Conducts pre-trip, skill, and road performance tests to determine an applicant's eligibility for all types of drivers' licenses but primarily for Category 4 and commercial driver license Category A through C and applicable endorsements;
  • Checks current license together with appropriate Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification card to ensure that applicant is qualified for a permit;
  • Issues learners' permits to applicants possessing the necessary licenses, DOT medical certification card and proper vision;
  • Explains to applicants the procedures and requirements for a road test and the ensuing driver course;
  • Passes or fails applicant based upon applicant's overall performance on the pre-trip, skill and road tests;
  • Issues the drivers' licenses to applicants who pass the various tests;
  • Explains to failing applicants the reason for failure, how to improve their driving skills, and procedures for rescheduling skill test;
  • Checks personnel driving common carrier vehicles for possession of DOT medical certificates and drivers' licenses;
  • May supervise and participate in driver licensing activities involving applications for Category 1 through 3 driver licenses;
  • Assists in instructing office procedures, report preparation, and methods of driver license examining;
  • Answers licensing inquiries and complaints;
  • Assists driver license counter service; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and:

  • Two (2) years of work experience which involved explaining rules and regulations to others to determine their eligibility or non-eligibility for licenses, benefits, or similar matters; and
  • One and one half (1 ) years of work experience that includes one or more of the following: supervisory duties, inspectional tasks, driver training instruction, regulatory responsibilities, or road safety enforcement.

Special Requirement:

Possession of a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding, which must be presented at time of interview.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A and current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate. Prior to completion of probation, must possess a valid CDL Class A with Passenger (P), School Bus (S), and Tanker (N) endorsements and successful completion of a recognized certified CDL Examiner's training course.
