Surgical technologists work under the supervision and authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective of both invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. CSTs ensure that the operating room environment is safe, the equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. They are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique to combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Demonstrates critical thinking/clinical reasoning in decision making based on research-based evidence to assure the delivery of safe, quality, timely, compassionate, and cost-effective care to the patient populations served by the department(s)/unit(s)/area(s). Effectively communicates and collaborates both intra- and interdepartmentally with patients, families, physicians, administration and other healthcare team members. Adheres to organizational policies and procedures, and regulatory/accrediting body requirements.
Major Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities
- Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for assigned procedure; ensures equipment is functioning properly; ensures appropriate sterility of instruments and supplies.
- Assists with patient transfers from stretcher to operating room table as needed to ensure safety.
- Collaborates with anesthesia providers to ensure maintenance of normothermia of patient during procedures.
- Demonstrates competency in urinary catheter insertion if indicated.
- Performs surgical scrub, and dons sterile gown and gloves, and establishes sterile field with necessary items to safely complete the procedure.
- Performs initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the Circulating RN.
- Demonstrates appropriate draping of the patients and establishing the sterile field.
Minimum Requirements:
- Successful completion of a surgical technology program accredited by Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA)
Minimum Certification Required:
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR (BLS) certification required
- Certified Surgical Technician through NBSTSA required OR Certified Surgical First Assistant through NBSTSA required
Minimum Experience:
- 1 year experience as a CST or CSFA required
Shift:
Full Time / 40 hours per week
