Senior Network Engineer / Networking Team Lead
to oversee enterprise networking operations and lead a team supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This role is responsible for the design, configuration, and sustainment of secure, high-performance network environments that enable large-scale data migration, application hosting, and hybrid cloud/on-premises connectivity. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise, proven leadership experience, and a track record of managing mission-critical infrastructure in highly regulated environments.
This position requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
Responsibilities:
Lead and mentor the Networking Team, managing workload distribution, priorities, and technical direction. Architect, configure, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure across VA data centers, cloud environments, and remote sites. Manage and optimize network devices including Cisco Nexus switches, Mellanox switches, Palo Alto firewalls, and F5 load balancers. Oversee WAN/LAN connectivity to VA Medical Centers, enterprise data centers, and cloud platforms, ensuring redundancy, reliability, and security. Configure and manage firewall policies, network segmentation, VPN access, and SSL certificate lifecycle. Monitor network performance, identify anomalies, and resolve complex Layer 2/Layer 3 routing and switching issues. Coordinate network capacity planning, upgrades, and migrations to meet evolving performance and scalability needs. Ensure compliance with VA cybersecurity policies and security hardening guidelines, including vulnerability remediation and STIG alignment. Maintain network topology diagrams, IP addressing schemes, VLAN assignments, and configuration documentation. Collaborate with infrastructure, storage, database, and application teams to ensure end-to-end system performance and security. Serve as the escalation point for critical network incidents and coordinate with vendors for advanced troubleshooting and resolution. Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field. 10+ years of hands-on network engineering experience in enterprise or federal environments. Proven leadership experience managing a network engineering team or leading large-scale network initiatives. Expert-level knowledge of Cisco Nexus platforms, routing/switching protocols, VLANs, and network segmentation. Strong experience with Palo Alto firewall configuration, policy management, and high-availability setups. Proficiency with F5 load balancer configuration, SSL certificate management, and application traffic optimization. Familiarity with network performance monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, NetScout, or equivalent. Experience supporting hybrid on-premises/cloud networking environments. U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance. Additional Qualifications:
Experience supporting VA or other federal healthcare systems. Knowledge of Azure networking, hybrid connectivity, and secure cloud integration. Familiarity with automation tools and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Ansible) for network configuration management. Industry certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, PCNSE, or F5-CTS. Experience supporting high-availability architectures for clinical and data integration systems. Benefits:
