Job Description

Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.

To perform work of considerable difficulty by planning and prioritizing the installation, diagnostics, and repair, and testing of a variety of computer and/or networking equipment such as personal computers and their peripherals. Oversee the work of vendor and contract personnel. Maintain detailed records on equipment and parts inventory, network configuration tables, equipment maintenance schedules, intra/inter-building cabling schemes, splices and repairs. Evaluate vendors products to ensure that they meet purchasing specifications and that purchases are in accord with the colleges general technology spending plan. Performs all purchasing and inventory for the department; maintain financial records and reports.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform in the position:

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with users, management, and vendors. Ability to determine the source and nature of technical problems related to hardware, software, and network systems. Detail oriented. Ability to identifying complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Work values includes being reliable, responsible, and dependable in fulfilling obligations of the position. Able to be pleasant with others on the job and display a good-natured, cooperative attitude. Required Minimum Qualifications:

Experience in providing technical support of hardware, software, and repair services to end users. Ability to determine the source and nature of technical problems related to hardware, software, and network systems. Basic knowledge of TCP/IP protocols. Experience installing, troubleshooting, and repairing various types of printers. Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite and various operating systems. Demonstrated ability maintaining a budget. Demonstrated ability to collect and organize material for reports.

Additional Considerations

CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, and/or Cisco CCNA certifications. Experience with inventory management. Associate's degree or higher in a related field.
