In 2017, VCU Health System built a beautiful, brand-new hospital that is both aesthetically and clinically spectacular. This facility includes 54 beds on three med-surg floors, a 10-bed ICU, 6 labor and delivery beds, and 16 emergency department beds. The current primary service area is around 80,000 people and includes Mecklenburg, Lunenburg, and Brunswick Counties with a secondary service area extending into North Carolina. Because of the high-quality care provided at the facility, the daily census is growing with a median of about 54 patients and a range up to 74 patients. The EMR is Epic. Position Responsibilities: Schedule: Hospitalists typically work a 7 on, 7 off model of 12-hour shifts. During the week, two physicians and two APPs round with a shift start time of 7 AM. Providers alternate in a round-and-go model with at least one provider staying until 7 PM. An admitter comes in at 10 AM and works until 10 PM. The night provider comes in at 7 PM and works until 7 AM. On the weekends, the admitter becomes a rounder, and there are no APPs and no admitter; the physicians admit in round robin fashion. Approximately one week in twelve is night coverage. Median census per physician team is 14 patients. Median number of day admissions is 8.5, and median number of night admissions is 6. Patient Load: The patients are 100% inpatient with an open ICU. Median census per physician team is 14 patients. Median number of day admissions is 8.5, and median number of night admissions is 6. On-site consultation is available from pulmonary/critical care, cardiology, surgery, and anesthesia. Other consultation can be sought from subspecialists at VCU Medical Center in Richmond but may require the patient be transferred. Procedures: Hospitalists rarely perform procedures, but comfort with central lines is preferred. Providers from surgery and anesthesia perform most procedures. Codes are run by hospitalists and emergency medicine providers. Teaching: As part of the new family medicine residency in South Hill, physician will regularly supervise second- and third-year residents. Faculty are expected to provide typical supervision, train these residents on the care of adult inpatients, and complete evaluation and feedback of the residents.
