We have an opening for a per diem Surgical Technician to assist the physician and registered nurse in rendering professional care to patients undergoing ophthalmic procedures within the center, in accordance with established procedures. Works under the direct supervision of the registered nurse. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics. This is a per diem role and candidate should be available Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday. QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:Completed an accredited educational program for surgical technologists.Maintains a surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist certifying body (preferred).If not certified; the surgical technician has been employed in the surgical technician role since July 2013.Displays a primary interest in giving good patient care and maintaining standards of courtesy and friendliness to coworkers and patients.Maintains basic life support certification.Able to maintain and comply with patient confidentiality and integrity policy on all matters.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Preoperative Duties:Donning OR attire and personal protective equipement (PPE).Gathers, checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure.Performs the surgical scrub and donning gown and gloves.Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed for the procedure. Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator. Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field. Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.Secures tubing, cords and other sterile accessories. Intraoperative Duties:Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure in such a way that their attention is not diverted from the operating field. Measures and passes medications, and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure. Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.Sponges or suctions the operative site.Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.Performs addtional counts as necessary. Prepares sterile dressings.Prepares and passes off specimens(s) as appropriate.Refers situations beyond abilitiy or function to proper person. General Duties:Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room and equipment.Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient and next surgical day.Assists in maintaining adequate inventory of supplies.Assists in housekeeping responsibilities as directed by the clinical supervisor/director.Performs other tasks and duties with their legal limitations as directed by the clinical supervisor/director.Informs clinical supervisor when leaving for break, lunch or for the day. Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care. Seeks educational opportunities and accepts responsibilities for own professional growth and development. Participates with in-service opportunities and staff meetings. Must maintain patient right to privacy including not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors, family or patient.
