Archer
Staff Power Electronics Engineer
Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers while producing minimal noise. Our sights are set high and our problems are hard, and we believe that diversity in the workplace is what makes us smarter, drives better insights, and will ultimately lift us all to success. We are dedicated to cultivating an equitable and inclusive environment that embraces our differences, and supports and celebrates all of our team members. What You'll Do:
Design and build high voltage, high power density power electronics converter products for eVTOL applications. Develop and analyze electrical architectures and power converter (DC-DC) topologies, and ensure system functions, performance, safety and reliability requirements are achieved. Responsible for all aspects of power electronics designs required in an all-electric aircraft, from components to circuits, modules and system integration. Leads new designs from conception into production while working with a multidisciplinary team. Start to finish ownership of hardware
from specification to design, component selection, modeling, prototype, product build, verification testing, safety and reliability validation and manufacturing. Design electronic power supply and sensing circuits. Schematic, layout and PCB assembly design and review. Design and carry out prototype verification tests for proof of concept. Analyze test data and reports to determine if the design meets functional and performance specifications. Troubleshoot and help root cause any issues that occur in the prototype line. Continuous improvement of converter product performance (weight, size, functions and features, reliability, DFM, DFT). Work with manufacturing, supply chain, quality teams to ensure efficient and high yield production of converter products. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet product safety and reliability requirements. Design, optimize, build and test custom magnetics (high-frequency transformers, inductors) for aerospace power electronics systems. Support EMC and environmental stress testing and failure / fault analysis for various power electronics modules and systems. What You Need:
BS Degree in Electrical Engineering with 10+ years or MS with 8+ years of experience in related fields. Sound knowledge and hands-on experience in traditional and modern power electronic technologies including (not limited to): Low power and high power DC-DC topologies, gate driver, modulation techniques and control theories. Inverter technology for variable speed motor drive, including topologies and PWM techniques. Familiarity with both wide-band-gap and silicon power semiconductor devices. Passive power devices, e.g. inductors, capacitors, resistors and transformers. Experience in design, build, manufacturing and testing of custom magnetics (high-frequency transformers, inductors). Power electronics system architecture design and hardware integration. Power converters and motor drive (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC) control technologies. Microcontrollers and multiple serial protocols (UART, CAN, SPI, I2C, etc.). Sensor technology and implementation. Gate drive design. Experience with high voltage (400V-1000V) DC-DC converter products, familiar with high-frequency and soft-switching technologies. Experience in using schematic capture tools (e.g. Altium Designer or Allegro). PCB layout experience is strongly preferred. Experience in using electrical circuit simulation software (e.g. Matlab/Simulink, PLECS, LTspice). Experience performing circuit design analyses such as worst-case circuit analysis, fault analysis, and lifetime estimation. Master of all types of lab instruments: oscilloscope, power supplies, electronics loads, function generators, network analyzer, EMC analyzers etc. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Bonus Qualifications:
Hands on experience with DO-160G testing and DO-254 development. Ph. D. in power electronics. Embedded firmware development experience. Experience with 50kW-200kW inverters at 400V-1000V. Passion for aviation and eVTOLs. At Archer we aim to attract, retain, and motivate talent that possess the skills and leadership necessary to grow our business. We drive a pay-for-performance culture and reward performance that supports the Company's business strategy. For this position we are targeting a base pay between $163,200.00 - $200,000.00. Actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
