Actively participates in patient care and safety. Utilizes operating room supplies conservatively. Functions effectively as a team member of the operating room staff. Follows infection control policies and procedures and demonstrates expertise in surgical scrub technique. Adheres to principles of sterile technique preoperatively and intraoperatively. Assists the surgeon as needed with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments during procedures. Anticipates the surgeon's needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment. Maintains an organized operative field at all times by keeping instruments clean and in their proper places. Keeps an accurate count of sponges, tapes, needles, and instruments. Prepares for cases by assembling supplies and equipment according to preference cards, identifying conflicts or problems. Cares appropriately for instruments and supplies after each case. Provides a safe surgical environment for the patient, identifying potential hazards. Displays knowledge of potential hazards within the operating room. Utilizes experienced operating room staff as a resource and acts as a resource for new personnel. Assists in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under the direction of the surgeon. Handles and identifies specimens per policy. Expedites the effective and efficient turnover of the operating room between cases. Takes rotating call duty. Performs additional responsibilities as requested.
