Master Level Technician Position

Job Requirements: The Master Level Technician is an onsite, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM position, with no weekends. Our Transportation Department provides and maintains the tools, no need for you to provide your own! This position is a part of our Transportation department within the Facilities Planning and Management Division at UW-Madison. The Master Technician is one of the lead technician positions at the shop. This person will be diagnosing and repairing many items that come through the shop. This position acts as a guiding knowledge to other technicians with diagnosis and repairs. They will be mostly working on heavy trucks and equipment but may have to work on smaller assets as needed. They will also go on service calls and fix equipment in the field. This position may assist with snow removal during the winter season if needed.

About Transportation Services: UW Transportation Services is a department within Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) on the UW-Madison campus. We serve a variety of customers with a diverse set of parking and transportation needs. Transportation Services is responsible for the coordination and administration of all transportation-related services for the UW campus community. Primary functions include the sale/management of parking permits, special event coordination, maintenance and enforcement, construction coordination, lot and booth operations, citation payments and appeals, information technology, financial, transportation planning, and development of multimodal options.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and troubleshoots complex vehicle and large-engine issues and collaborates with work unit staff to resolve issues.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs complex parts and systems for large-engine vehicles and equipment under general supervision to ensure optimal and safe operation.
  • Serves as a point of contact to individuals providing information and updates about vehicle and large-engine maintenance and repairs.
  • Documents completed maintenance and repairs according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with snow removal from parking lots and vehicles and repair snow removal equipment.
  • Diagnose and replace or repair engine management systems or related sensors for flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) with ignition timing, fuel rate, alcohol concentration, or air-to-fuel ratio malfunctions.
  • Conduct visual inspections of compressed natural gas fuel systems to identify cracks, gouges, abrasions, discoloration, broken fibers, loose brackets, damaged gaskets, or other problems.
  • Install, adjust, or repair hydraulic or electromagnetic automatic lift mechanisms used to raise and lower automobile windows, seats, and tops.
  • Repair, replace, or adjust defective fuel injectors, carburetor parts, and gasoline filters.
  • Tune automobile engines to ensure proper and efficient functioning.
  • Troubleshoot fuel, ignition, and emissions control systems, using electronic testing equipment.
  • Repair or replace parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings.
  • Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
  • Repair and service air conditioning, heating, engine cooling, and electrical systems.
  • Change spark plugs, fuel filters, air filters, and batteries in hybrid electric vehicles.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work area.
  • Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
  • Tear down, repair, and rebuild faulty assemblies, such as power systems, steering systems, and linkages.
  • Align wheels, axles, frames, torsion bars, and steering mechanisms of automobiles, using special alignment equipment and wheel-balancing machines.
  • Align vehicles' front ends.
  • Confer with customers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
  • Review work orders and discuss work with supervisors.
  • Repair, reline, replace, and adjust brakes.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers' performance specifications.
  • Test drive vehicles and test components and systems, using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.
  • Inspect vehicles for damage and record findings so that necessary repairs can be made.

Other Experience and Qualifications: Required Qualifications: CDL with air brake endorsement Preferred Qualifications: 2 years of professional experience working with heavy trucks and diesel engines
