The CNC Lathe Setup Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating CNC lathes to produce precision-machined parts according to engineering specifications. This role includes interpreting complex drawings, adjusting machining processes, and performing in-process inspections. Ideal candidates are experienced with lathe setups, comfortable with tight tolerances, and capable of optimizing tooling and cycle times in a high-mix, low volume environment.

About the Role

This role involves setting up and operating CNC lathes to produce precision-machined parts according to engineering specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Setup & Operation
  • Create and optimize CNC programs (G/M code) for multi-axis CNC lathes.
  • Program from technical drawings, GD&T callouts, or 3D CAD models.
  • Select tooling and define cutting paths and machining parameters.
  • Set up and operate CNC lathes to test and validate programs.
  • Perform first-article inspections to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot machining or programming issues to ensure repeatable results.
  • Quality
  • Use micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and indicators to inspect work.
  • Ensure part quality through in-process inspections and documentation.
  • Accurately complete job travelers, logs, and inspection reports.
  • Identify and report any quality concerns, material issues, or nonconformances.
  • Process Improvement & Support
  • Collaborate with engineers and team leads to improve machining efficiency.
  • Recommend improvements to reduce cycle time or increase consistency.
  • Maintain strong communication across shifts and departments.
  • Train and support operators or junior machinists when needed.
  • Safety & Workplace Organization
  • Adhere to all company safety policies and use appropriate PPE.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area throughout the shift.
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance and communicate any issues.
  • Communicate open tasks and issues during shift changes.

Qualifications

  • Required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 10+ years of experience setting up and operating CNC lathes
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret GD&T
  • Proficient with tooling, work holding, and inspection equipment
  • Proficient in reading, writing and editing CNC programs (G/M code).
  • Experience with multi-axis or live-tool lathes.
  • Strong knowledge of CNC programming, machining processes and tooling.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with precision.
  • Capability to lift and handle materials up to 35 lbs.
  • Standing for extended periods while working with CNC equipment.
  • Manual dexterity for handling small parts and measurement tools.
