The Surgical Tech First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition, the First Assist performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The First Assist to the surgeon during the operation does so under the direction and supervision of that surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

Assists nurses, surgeons, and anesthesia personnel in the indirect and direct care of patients. Includes the preparation of the O.R. rooms, patient transport, placement of equipment, and property utilized in Surgical Services i.e. the OR, PACU, SDC, and CSR. Preparing rooms with proper equipment for start of day and upcoming cases, room turnover between cases, anticipating which cases will be finishing and coordinating with nurses to bring bed into room, patient transport, and other various duties as assigned.

Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date, Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA), or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFA).
