Job Description
A Brief Overview
We are seeking a highly capable Senior Environmental Technical Claims Specialist to join our team. This position can be based in one of our offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Omaha, Richmond (VA), Rockwood (PA), or San Antonio, or remotely from anywhere in the continental United States. The successful candidate will report to a manager based in New York City and will focus on adjudicating first and third-party commercial environmental claims, primarily complex storage tank claims, contributing to delivering excellent results for our clients.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Adjudicate commercial environmental claims with high technical complexity, often at the highest authority limits, and with significant impact on departmental results.
- Conduct detailed information gathering, analysis, and investigation to resolve issues that are numerous and undefined.
- Report claims trends and developments to senior management and underwriters.
- Analyze claims forms, policies, endorsements, client instructions, and other records to determine policy coverage applicability.
- Investigate claims thoroughly, including interviewing involved parties.
- Manage claims in litigation effectively.
- Ensure timely and complete diary management to facilitate case resolution and optimal financial outcomes.
- Set appropriate claim reserves considering policy wording impacts.
- Identify loss drivers and trends to reduce claims frequency and severity through data analysis and improved management.
- Coordinate the assignment of expertise resources to assist in case resolution.
- Prepare comprehensive reports for file documentation.
- Apply creative solutions to achieve the best financial outcomes.
- Negotiate effectively within own limits, employing various negotiation styles to reach cost-effective solutions.
- Process mail, prioritize workload, and handle correspondence with insureds, claimants, and other parties.
- Demonstrate a passion for strong claim management and customer service.
Core Qualifications and Requirements
- Strong business acumen, understanding how insurance companies operate and profit, and how this role impacts company and client profitability.
- Minimum of seven years' experience adjudicating commercial environmental claims with exposure of $100,000 or more.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university; J.D. preferred. Alternatively, two or more insurance designations or four additional years of relevant experience can substitute for a degree.
- Licensed Claims Examiner or ability to obtain license within 120 days as required by jurisdiction.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build lasting relationships.
- Strong evaluation, strategic, and negotiation skills.
- Customer-focused with effective time management and workload prioritization skills.
- Ability to articulate financial value to various stakeholders, including executive levels.
- Discretion and independent judgment in significant matters.

- Proficiency in MS Office and other business software.
- Fluent in reading and writing English.

Salary and Benefits
The base salary range varies by geographic location, with additional eligibility for annual bonuses and a comprehensive benefits package. Specific ranges are provided for different regions, for example:
- Colorado outside Denver metro, Maryland, Massachusetts (outside Boston), Minnesota, Nevada, Rhode Island, Vermont: $134,800 - $185,800
- Boston metro, California outside LA & SF, Connecticut, Chicago metro, Denver metro, New Jersey (outside NYC), New York State (outside NYC), Washington State: $148,100 - $204,300
- NYC, LA, SF metro areas: $161,800 - $223,100
