Job Summary:
The Underwriting Specialist serves as the technical expert in a designated coverage, product, or line, mentoring less experienced staff. They select, review, analyze, and underwrite complex submissions, determine risk terms and conditions, and respond to brokers with options and cross-sell opportunities. They also assist in training, mentoring, and identifying new business opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Serve as subject matter expert in a product segment
- Handle complex accounts, assessing eligibility using sound decision-making within authority limits
- Analyze new business and develop renewal strategies
- Achieve quote, premium, and division goals
- Maintain strong broker relationships
- Negotiate placements and travel as needed
- Participate in business planning and product development
- Assist in training, onboarding, and audit processes
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Effective risk evaluation and account rating skills
- Knowledge of pricing, rating techniques, and loss-sensitive programs
- Understanding of forms, coverages, and exposures
- Ability to mentor and work independently or in teams
- Strong market awareness and negotiation skills
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Proficiency in MS Office and internet research
Experience and Education:
- 15+ years industry experience, 10+ in Excess and Surplus lines
- Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
- Experience in marketing and underwriting related products; professional designations preferred
Senior Underwriter:
- Bachelors degree or equivalent
- Minimum 5 years underwriting experience, preferably in Excess and Surplus lines
Underwriter:
- Bachelors degree or equivalent
- At least 2 years of related underwriting experience, preferably in Excess and Surplus lines
