Position Description
Transportation Engineer II:
Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Transportation Engineer III:
Performs (advanced) and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. (Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence).
Essential Duties for Transportation Engineer II - III:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience:
Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Engineer III: *6 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience

Essential Duties for Transportation Engineer II - III:
- Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and
contracts. - Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.
- Trains engineering staff.
- Reviews designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.
- Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
- Assists Project Managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines for complex projects.
- Performs highly complex structural analysis of bridge designs.
- Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans.
- Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
- Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special
specifications or special provisions. - Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education:

Licenses and Certifications :
- Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Prof Engineer*
- If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification.
- For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.
Competencies for Transportation Engineer II - III:
- Applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations specific to area of responsibility for safeguarding information
and information technology related systems. - Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles.
- Fatigue and fracture mechanics.
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities.
- Computerized structural analysis techniques.
- Geometric design relationships to traffic operations, maintenance and construction.
- Foundation analysis programs.
- Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities.
- Performing basic design and drafting.
- Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines.
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.
- Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools.
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
- Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts.

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
