(“MEI”) is a leading construction and engineering company performing work throughout California in a variety of market segments. The corporate office is in southeast Los Angeles County with business units in LA, Riverside, San Diego and Ventura and with plans for materially growing the size of the company. Reporting to the President of MEI, (with accountability to the Meruelo Group CFO) the Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the preparation of the financial plans and policies, accounting practices, procedures and controls, cash management, and the organization’s financial reporting systems and methods for MEI’s family of construction companies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Strategy, Planning, and Management: Act as Chief Financial Officer and strategic business partner to the executive leadership team Assess and evaluate financial performance of the Construction companies with regards to short and long-term operational goals, budgets, and forecasts Provide insight and recommendations to both short-term and long-term growth plans of the Construction entities Communicate, engage, and interact with the COO of Meruelo Enterprises, Inc., the Presidents of the construction companies and ownership Create and establish yearly financial objectives that align with the construction companies’ plans for growth and expansion Recruit, interview and hire finance, accounting and payroll staff as required Implement policies, procedures, and processes as deemed appropriate by the senior leadership team Financial Analysis, Budgeting and Forecasting Prepare and present monthly financial reports including monthly profit and loss statements by company, actuals vs. budgets, and cash flow by company, ensuring all are in accordance with GAAP. Review and analyze monthly financial results and provide recommendations Develop and maintain monthly operating budget and annual company operating budgets Manage financial planning and analysis personnel. Supervise preparation of reports as required for budgeting and forecasting Accounting, General Ledger, Administration and Operations Supervise the Controller, and other Accounting department personnel, ensuring the proper functioning of all systems, databases, and financial software. Review and ensure application of appropriate internal controls, including applicable compliance and financial reporting procedures Ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial and management reporting for ownership Oversee the preparation and communication of weekly, monthly, and annual financial statements Provide required information for the preparation of income tax returns. Ensure State and Federal compliance regarding all financial functions Oversee the month-end close processes constantly reviewing procedures while eliminating inefficiencies Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP Serve as key point of contact for external auditors, and manage the annual audit. Financial Management Manage cash flow planning process and ensure funds availability Oversee cash and asset management Maintain strategic alliances with vendors and business partners Utilize forward-looking financial models and activity-based analyses to provide financial insight into the organization’s plans and operating budgets Remain current on audit best practices as well as state, federal, and local laws regarding company operations Cash Management Oversee weekly cash management and AP department, approve large payables, sign checks, authorize wire transfers and ACH’s Supervise Accounts Receivable management and provide guidance relating to the collection process Position Qualifications and Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting CPA designation preferred Experience with unions preferred A minimum of 6 years’ experience as a CFO in construction with annual revenues of $300M+ 15+ years total accounting and finance experience including prior role as a Controller Outstanding knowledge and understanding of GAAP, and compliance standards. Hands on experience with Financial software systems Outstanding communication and presentation skills Demonstrated leadership ability, confidence and executive presence – ability to lead and motivate staff Excellent analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills Ability to train, develop, and mentor finance and accounting staff Significant experience working with external auditors, internal controls and compliance-related issues
