Job Description

The Hyperbaric Technologist & Safety Officer is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the hyperbaric chamber(s) and related support systems. The Hyperbaric Technologist & Safety Officer is responsible for the administration and safe delivery of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to hyperbaric patients under the direct supervision of a Physician or Registered Nurse. Serves as the safety officer for the hyperbaric department by overseeing regulatory and safety guidelines in accordance with various licensing and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

Administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy as ordered to patients under the direction of a Physician or Registered Nurse

Educates patient/family member(s) on safety regulations of the pressurized environment and Valsalva techniques for pressure equalization during treatment Observes and supervises patients and the hyperbaric systems closely during the course of hyperbaric oxygen treatment Assures hyperbaric oxygen therapy provided is according to safety requirements and guidelines

Serves as the Safety Officer by overseeing regulatory and safety guidelines in accordance with various licensing and regulatory agencies

Oversees equipment and safety checks, preventative system maintenance, and quality control measures Ensures compliance with the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA 99) code for healthcare facilities Incorporates new safety procedures as appropriate to daily check-off procedures for initial start-up/shut-down of chambers, bulk oxygen system, and all other related equipment Maintains operating, maintenance and safety logs and other required documentation in accordance with hyperbaric codes Reviews all department safety incidents and reports relevant incidents to appropriate staff Removes and/or replaces any potentially hazardous supplies or equipment from the chamber

Delegates patient care to designated respiratory care staff and maintains accountability for delegation

Confirms charts/schedules are complete at the end of each day Oversees and makes inquiries into activities delegated to others Provides expert guidance and advice to others on technical, systematic, or process-related topics Provides safety and in-service training periodically

Qualifications

Education:

Associate's Degree: Successful completion of a Certified Respiratory Technician (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) program conferred by the National Board of Respiratory Care Successful completion of 40 CME credit hours in a hyperbaric course approved by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) Successful completion of an accredited Hyperbaric Safety Director training course Experience:

2 years of direct clinical experience as a respiratory therapist including critical care and ventilator management Skills:

Communicating effectively in writing or talking Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance
