Position Summary The Clinical Laboratory Services Director reports directly to the Vice President of Ancillary Services and is responsible for the strategic planning, administration, and overall operations of the clinical laboratory. This role ensures that all laboratory services meet quality, regulatory, and accreditation standards while supporting the organization’s patient care objectives. The Director oversees staff, manages budgets, implements best practices, and fosters a culture of excellence, compliance, and continuous improvement. Supervises, coordinates, and evaluates the systems and personnel responsible for the collection and processing of specimens to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease. Consults with pathologist regarding compliance with regulatory standards and changes in test procedures. Oversee a wide variety of administrative, fiscal, and technical activities to ensure the efficient operation of all departments of the clinical laboratory. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Leadership & Administration Provide strategic direction and leadership for all laboratory operations, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, transfusion services, pathology, and other diagnostic areas. Develop and implement short- and long-term goals in alignment with the organization’s mission and clinical priorities. Maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and accreditation requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP, The Joint Commission, CMS). Oversee preparation for inspections, audits, and proficiency testing. Develop, monitor, and manage the departmental budget, including cost controls and resource allocation. Operational Management Direct workflow to ensure timely and accurate testing, reporting, and documentation. Evaluate and implement new technologies, instrumentation, and testing methodologies to enhance efficiency and diagnostic capabilities. Maintain quality assurance and quality control programs; investigate and resolve quality issues promptly. Develop and maintain policies and procedures that support safe, efficient, and compliant laboratory operations. Staff Management & Development Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate laboratory personnel, including supervisors, technologists, and support staff. Promote a positive and collaborative work environment that supports employee engagement and professional development. Ensure ongoing staff competency through training, continuing education, and performance reviews. Collaboration & Communication Serve as a liaison between laboratory services, medical staff, nursing, and other hospital departments. Provide expert consultation to clinicians on test selection, interpretation of results, and clinical relevance. Communicate laboratory performance metrics and operational updates to senior leadership. Qualifications Education & Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field required; Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Medical Technology, or related discipline preferred. Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS/MLS) or equivalent certification required. ASCP, AMT, or similar professional certification strongly preferred. Experience: Minimum 5 years of progressive laboratory experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role. Proven experience managing budgets, compliance programs, and multidisciplinary teams in a clinical laboratory setting. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: In-depth knowledge of laboratory operations, testing methodologies, and quality management systems. Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving abilities. Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and healthcare technologies. PAY / BENEFITS • Estimated pay is based on qualifications (including but not limited to experience, education, certifications, and licensure where applicable).
