Job Summary
The Supervisor - Medical/Surgical is responsible for the coordination and supervision of clinical activities and staff on the Med/Surg Unit during assigned shifts This position ensures appropriate staffing, compliance with clinical policies and regulatory standards, and timely communication with interdisciplinary team members The supervisor provides clinical leadership, facilitates patient throughput, supports staff development, and helps promote a culture of safety and service excellence Essential Functions
Coordinates daily operations of the Medical/Surgical unit, ensuring timely admissions, discharges, and patient care transitions Provides leadership support to nurses and assistive personnel in a hands-on supervisory capacity Monitors staff performance, provides coaching, and supports annual evaluations and competencies Assists in staffing and scheduling, adjusts assignments based on patient acuity and census Promotes effective communication with physicians, patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams Participates in new hire orientation, on-the-job training, and in-service education Ensures compliance with hospital policies, safety protocols, and Joint Commission standards Monitors inventory, supply use, and assists in cost-containment strategies Investigates and documents patient or staff incidents; escalates concerns appropriately Supports and participates in quality improvement initiatives and audits Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
Strong knowledge of clinical care standards, patient safety, and nursing best practices Excellent leadership, decision-making, and delegation skills Effective communication, conflict resolution, and mentoring abilities Proficient in EMR systems and clinical documentation Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced inpatient environment Frequent walking, standing, and lifting up to 50 lbs Visual and auditory acuity to assess patients and respond to clinical alarms Manual dexterity to operate equipment and perform clinical procedures Medical/Surgical inpatient unit Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and patient care hazards PPE required for patient contact and infection prevention Qualifications
Education
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Bachelor's in a related healthcare field (Preferred) Master's degree (Preferred) Licenses/Certifications
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice (Required) Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - based on facility requirements Specialty certification (e.g., Med/Surg RN-BC, CMSRN) - based facility requirements Experience
Minimum 3 years of recent acute care nursing experience in a medical/surgical setting (Required) Previous experience in a charge nurse or supervisory role (Preferred)
