Position Summary :

Under the direction of the Vice President of Associate Executive, the Center’s Executive Director will lead, coach, and hold others accountable for creating a transformative Y Experience. The Centers Executive Director must possess strong leadership skills to inspire staff, volunteers, partners, and community members to support the Y mission. The Executive Director will be a subject matter expert and innovator in the core business and programs of the Y. They will lead their Centers to ensure the successful execution of the YMCA of Greater Boston’s strategic goals to be a charity, partner, and employer of choice. Innovation, especially in Design Thinking, will be a key area of growth for the Executive Director and their supervisee, the Associate Executive Director.

Qualifications

Education / Experience :

  • BS / BA Four-year college degree.
  • Proven record in membership and program growth, board development, fiscal management, community engagement, and staff development.
  • Multiple years of successful fiscal management, meeting or exceeding budgets over several years.
  • Achievement of key metrics, including strong Net-Promoter scores and successful OKRs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of the YMCA movement, volunteers, and staff in achieving YMCA goals and mission.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to delegate.
  • Highly motivated with a positive attitude towards the YMCA, character development, and our mission.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Design Thinking.

Physical Demands :

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, talk, and hear. Frequently sit and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally lift/move up to 10 pounds. Visual abilities include close and distance vision and the ability to adjust.

Work Environment :

  • Periodic evening, early morning, or weekend hours.
  • Occasional travel.

Essential Functions

Key Functions / Responsibilities :

The Center’s Executive Director is the chief leader in driving the Y Experience in the Center and community, creating a loyal membership base, energizing staff and volunteers, inspiring donors, and fostering growth and innovation.

The Executive Director will ensure success in areas such as:

  • Performance achievement, including hiring, coaching, managing staff, and ensuring progress with OKRs.
  • Fiscal management, developing budgets, forecasting, and correcting financial issues.
  • Membership and program growth, ensuring a high-quality Y Experience.
  • Board development, recruiting and maintaining an effective Board of Advisors.
  • Fundraising and financial development, meeting quarterly and annual goals.
  • Community engagement, building partnerships and enhancing the Y’s reputation.
  • Youth development, collaborating with youth program leads.
  • Innovation, leading design thinking practices.
  • Marketing, executing strategies and campaigns, promoting the Centers through media and community outreach.
  • Facility management, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and maintenance.
  • Staying current on trends affecting the Centers, including demographics, competition, community changes, and program areas.
  • The Executive Director will also participate in all meetings, lead organization-wide initiatives, and perform other duties as assigned.

    Outcomes and Position Expectations :

    • Achieve strategic plan metrics, Net-Promoter Scores, and OKRs.
    • Be recognized as a subject matter expert and innovator in core YMCA programs.
    • Maintain effective operating practices for membership, programs, and facilities.
    • Address performance concerns with timely action plans.
    • Meet annual campaign targets.
    • Maintain a high-functioning, engaged Board of Advisors.
    • Be visible in the community, positioning the Y as a catalyst for positive change.
    • Ensure staff development plans are in place and progressing.
    • Identify development opportunities for direct reports and potential leaders.
    • Ensure staff achieve metric targets and produce meaningful results, including Net-Promoter scores and OKRs.
    • Foster a collaborative relationship with child development staff.
