The Chief Investment Officer (CIO) is responsible for overseeing and managing the investment activities of the family office, ensuring alignment with the family’s long-term financial objectives, values, and risk tolerance. This role involves setting investment strategy, asset allocation, manager selection, portfolio construction, and performance monitoring across a diverse set of asset classes, including public markets, private equity, real estate, and alternative investments.
Key Responsibilities:
Investment Strategy & Asset Allocation
- Develop and implement a comprehensive investment strategy aligned with the family's goals and values.
- Determine strategic and tactical asset allocation across asset classes.
Portfolio Management
- Manage a diversified investment portfolio including public equities, fixed income, hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, real estate, and other alternatives.
- Conduct regular portfolio reviews and rebalance as necessary.
Manager & Investment Selection
- Source, evaluate, and select external investment managers and direct investment opportunities.
- Conduct due diligence on fund managers and direct investments (including co-investments).
Risk Management
- Identify, monitor, and manage portfolio and operational risks.
- Ensure investment activities remain within the family’s risk appetite and investment policy guidelines.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Monitor portfolio performance against benchmarks and KPIs.
- Prepare and present regular investment reports to family principals and relevant stakeholders.
Governance & Compliance
- Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and internal investment policies.
- Support the creation and periodic review of the Investment Policy Statement (IPS).
Team & Advisor Oversight
- Manage internal investment staff and coordinate with external advisors, consultants, and managers.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with investment partners and service providers.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, or related field; MBA, CFA, or CAIA strongly preferred.
- 5-10 years of investment experience from a buy side environment (private equity, hedge fund, family office, etc.)
- Strong understanding of asset allocation, portfolio construction, and alternative investments.
- Demonstrated track record of investment success and prudent risk management.
- Exceptional analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
- High level of integrity, discretion, and professionalism.
