Local Driver

Packs and loads furniture or office machines into van, safely drives to specified destination and unloads furniture or office machines by performing the following duties as directed by dispatch and shipping documents. Safely operates truck according to state laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Consistent and regular attendance and punctuality is a requirement and essential function of the Local Driver position.
  • Safely drives to loading point and consults with shipper or vendor on items to be packed and moved.
  • Participates in loading during the entire moving process.
  • Assists in loading and unloading assigned cargo at pick-up and delivery destinations.
  • Coordinates and gives directions to helpers in efficiently packing and moving articles to van.
  • Wraps furniture with pads to prevent damage and packs dishes and fragile items in packing paper and packs them into appropriate containers using the United Van Lines and Lint Van Lines method.
  • Labels containers according to the United Van Lines and Lint Van Lines method.
  • Loads truck, distributes weight evenly, forming compact load, and utilizing space.
  • Safely drives van to their destination and participates in unloading during entire moving process.
  • Communicate with the Local Dispatcher via phone throughout the workday, as directed, for job updates and changes.
  • Completes inventories and final paperwork and obtains signatures from responsible parties.
  • Complete and pass United Van Lines' approved packers, movers and inventory training classes.
  • Comply with all company policies and safety procedures applicable to the performance of job duties.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to make reasonable decisions.
  • The ability to read and comprehend simple instructions or short correspondence.
  • The ability to present information to customers.
  • The ability to subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide by 10's and 100's, as well as the ability to perform these operations using weight measurements, volume, and distance.

Education / Experience:

  • A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is preferred but not required.
  • A valid drivers license.
  • A valid A or B Commercial Drivers License.

  • The physical demands of standing, walking, sitting, reaching with both hands and arms, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing and the ability to lift up to 100 pounds are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
