Job Description:
This is a student position involving 8 weeks of paid, hands-on training in welding, designed to prepare individuals for a career in shipbuilding. After successful completion of the training program, the student will progressively advance based on their ability, toward Journeyman status.
Key Responsibilities:
Training: Participate in an 8-week paid training program focused on welding techniques.
Welding: Weld assembly plating as specified by NASSCO and Navy standards.
Instruction Following: Follow written and oral instructions effectively.
Component Welding: Weld fabricated, cast, or forged components according to specifications, utilizing knowledge of metal welding characteristics.
Material Knowledge: Develop a working knowledge of various metals, alloys, electrode types, and welding procedures.
Process Improvement: Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, quality, cycle time, and cost reduction.
Welding Positions: Learn to weld in horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
Metal Preparation: Be able to use carbon electrodes to cut, shape, and groove metal.
Workplace Preparation: May prepare the workplace for welding by cleaning and/or preheating.
Examination: Examine weld sizes of weld beads.
Tasks: Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
Program Completion: Successful completion of NASSCO training program.
Welds parts in position for fabrication of vessels, tanks or other structural assemblies.
Uses carbon electrodes to cut, shape, and groove metal.
May prepare workplace for welding by cleaning and/or preheating.
Examines weld sizes of weld beads.
Actively participates in continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.
Students will learn to weld in horizontal, vertical and overhead positions.
