Histotechnician St. Francis Downtown

The Histotechnician will perform various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. The Histology Technician needs to ensure tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the required standards. Responsibilities include providing the highest quality medical laboratory services, working independently, and troubleshooting any problems, under the general supervision of a manager or lead technologist.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining
  • Assists the Pathologist in the gross examination of surgical specimens and the frozen section procedures
  • Reports accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient care
  • Documents problems that may affect test performance and performs corrective actions when needed
  • Operates and maintains all histology area lab equipment in the proper state of readiness, cleanliness, and sharpens and hones microtome knives
  • Monitors the inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used, and places orders for replacements as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education:

  • High School Degree or GED (required)
  • Associates Degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution (preferred)

Certifications:

  • Histotechnician (HT) Certification by a nationally recognized certification agency (preferably ASCP) (preferred)

Experience:

  • Histology experience preferred, not required

  • Ability to provide quality, error-free work in a fast-paced environment
  • Engage with staff and patients in a professional manner
